UNESCO World Heritage

Al-Balad

The historic heart of Jeddah. Walk through centuries of Arabian heritage in this UNESCO-protected district of coral-stone towers and ancient markets.

Where History Lives

Al-Balad, meaning "The Town" in Arabic, has been the gateway to Makkah for pilgrims traveling by sea for over a thousand years. Its unique architecture developed from the coral blocks pulled from the Red Sea and carved into stunning buildings.

The district's signature Roshan β€” intricately carved wooden balconies β€” were both decorative and functional, allowing air circulation and privacy in the hot Hijazi climate.

In 2014, UNESCO designated Al-Balad as a World Heritage Site, recognizing its outstanding universal value as an example of a traditional Red Sea coastal settlement.
